These are photos of constructing a 16' turntable. I built this with 1/8" plate steel with angle iron welded on top, bottom and ribs. Since all of the weight will be on the wheels located on the ends the turntable sides need to carry of the weight of the turntable and the locomotive. The center pivot doesn't carry weight but just provides the center pivot point. The turntable pit was built with landscaping blocks for the site walls and gravel base. There is a ring rail made from regular aluminum rail and 12" ties that the turntable end wheels ride upon. Since the turntable weighs about 300-400 pounds I used a skid loader to move and place it in the pit with the help of Bob, Bern and Steve from central Iowa.
